Pharmacology of the Hematopoietic System
Hematopoiesis is the production of erythrocytes, leucocytes and platelets from undifferentiated stem cells. Constant supply of iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid is necessary for normal hematopoiesis. Inadequate supply of either one of these nutrients results in deficiency of functional blood cells, especially erythrocytes. Thus, in the case of iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency, anemia is the most common and generally the first clinical finding. The subject of this course is the basic principles regarding the use of iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid in the treatment of anemias.
