GEO207 BASIC PALEONTOLOGY

Value of paleontologic studies in geologic exploration. Sampling and sample preparation techniques. Fossilization. Classification of the major fossil groups. Invertebrate fossils including microfossils such as foraminifera, nannoplanktons, calpionellids and radiolaria. Other invertebrates: Coelenterate, Brachiopod, Bryozoans, Mollusk (gastropods, bivalves and cephalopods), Arthropods (Trilobite), Echinoderm and Graptolites. A brief explanation on vertebrates. Their general features and selected index genus and species. Fossils as chronometers of the Phanerozoic and as paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic indicators.
