al Farabi and virtious cities
Emphasizing the concept of civilization, al-Farabi in his philosophical system tried to evaluate it within the contents of metaphysics, ethics and politics. His major works bear such titles as “madani” and “madinah”. Al-Farabi classified the kinds of states on the basis of knowledge and virtue. It is the civilization of the Greeks and the Muslims that shapes al-Farabi’s mind. Presenting the “perfect state” under the inspiration of his Greek masters he puts forward original views under the influence of his religious creeds. Misunderstood in Islamic societies, the concept of civilization is somehow associated with the meaning of colonization. In fact, if we look at the term “madaniyya” we find that it has an etymologically close connection with the term “din.” Civilization can only develop together with philosophy, religion and ethics. The Madinah and its leader are also necessary elements of civilization.
