This course focuses on playwrights who helped shape the American stage in the first half of the 20^th Century. We will study representative dramatists from each period and a range of dramatic styles with specific emphasis on modern drama. We will discuss the content and the form of the plays as they define American drama and American identity. Although analysis of dramatic texts will be our main focus, we will also pay attention to the theatrical, cultural, and historical contexts.
