Topic outline

  • INTRODUCTION

Advanced optical laboratory is developed  for senior  engineering physics students in Ankara University. The primary goal of this laboratory is to give students hand on experiences in optics, spectroscopy and fiber optics. Students are going to set up optical experiments on optical breadboards and using optical components provided by each experimental kit. They will get hand on experiences about setting up optical experiments, using lasers and detectors, collimating  light sources, aligning beam, building slide projectors, microscopes, interferometer, analyzing polarization status of a light beam, building a monochromator, measuring an absorption and emission spectrometer, handling and cleaving fibers, coupling light sources to a fiber, measuring the attenuation of a fiber spool, etc... Laboratory has five different experimental kits. More than one experiment are going to be performed with each experimental kit. The topics on these notes are organized with the name of the experimental kits. Theoretical background and experimental procedures are given as a separate word files for each experimental kit.  Students are grouped and each group performs the following experiments alternatively during the semester.

  • 1. ADVANCED SPECTROMETER KİT

Students are going to set up a spectrometer to learn the working principle of a monochromator.

The following experiments are going to be performed with advanced spectrometer kit:

Experiment 1: Wavelength Measurement of Three Lines in the Mercury Spectrum

Experiment 2: Measuring the Index of Refraction of the Prism Using a Known Spectral Line

Advanced Spectrometer Kit and the experimental procedures are provided by Thorlabs Inc.

  • 2. PROJECTS IN OPTICS

Students are going to set up experiments on an optical breadboard by using a He-Ne laser and optical component provided by the experimental kit.

The following experiments are going to be performed with this experiment kit

Experiment 2.1: Diffraction of Circular Apertures, Single Slit Diffraction and Double Slit Interference

    Experiment 2.2: The Michelson Interferometer

Experiment 2.3: Analyzing Polarization Status of Light Beam

Project in Optics Experimental Kit and the experimental procedures are provided by Newport Corporation.

  • 3. LEOK-3 OPTICS EXPERIMENT KIT

This kit provides a complete set of optical and mechanical components as well as light sources, which can be conveniently assembled to construct experimental setups. Almost all optics experiments required in general physics education (e.g. geometrical, physical, and modern optics) can be constructed in sequence using these components. Through selecting and assembling the corresponding components into experimental setups, students can enhance their experimental skills and problem solving ability.

The following experiments are going to performed with LEOK-3 Optics Experiment Kit:

Experiment 3.1: Building a Kepler Telescope

Experiment 3.2: Building a Slide Projector

Experiment 3.3: Analyzing Polarization Status of Light Beams

LEOK-3 experimental kit and the experimental procedures are provided by Lambda Scientific Inc.

  • 4. SPECTROSCOPY EXPERIMENTS KIT

Students will learn how to prepare a dye solution, how to take steady state absorption and emission spectra.

The following experiments are going to be performed with this experiment kit:

    Experiment 4.1: Beer-Lambert law

Experiment 4.2: Emission spectrum of light sources

Spectroscopy experimental kit and the experimental procedures are provided by Ocean Optics Inc.

  • 5. PROJECTS IN FIBER OPTICS

Projects in Fiber Optics (Newport Model #FKP-STD) is a set of laboratory equipment containing the hardware needed to complete a series of projects which will provide students, engineers and scientists with an introduction to the hands-on experience needed to master the basic concepts and laboratory techniques of optical fiber technology.

The following projects are going to be performed with this experimental set:

Experiment 5.1 Handling Fibers, Numerical Aperture

    Experiment 5.2 Fiber Attenuation

Experiment 5.3 Coupling Fibers to Semiconductor Sources

Projects in Fiber Optics Experimental Kit and the experimental procedures are provided by Newport Corporation.
