Following on from last semester’s examination of British culture, this course aims to widen the field, and take a broader look at the concerns of contemporary cultural studies. Starting with a brief history of cultural studies, we will then proceed to explore some of the main topics (i.e. class, ethnicity, gender) that this area of study currently deals with. In the course of our discussion, we will look at some of the influential critical works that have engaged with contemporary cultural issues. As well as examining the texts, we shall be looking at some short stories and cinematic works that explore these issues.
