Respiratory diseases can be extremely challenging to manage and diagnose. The respiratory system is one of
the four major body systems that requires addressing on an emergency basis. Respiratory dysfunction can result in severe physiologic compromise and imminent death if not dealt with appropriately. The respiratory workup is often dictated by the patient's condition, rather than the conven- ience of the clinician and the client. [n patients with severe respiratory compromise, a tentative diagnosis and preliminary therapeutic plan must be guided by signalment, history, phys- ical examination findings, and response to therapy pending stabilization for more definitive diagnostics
-

With an understanding of these three elements-mucosa, mucosal immune system, and microbiome-the clinician will be better able to understand and treat many intestinal diseases. As always, it is through a detailed history, thorough physical examination, and relevant tests that a definitive diagnosis can be reached; but only by an understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease can rational therapy be prescribed.
